GIF and JPG: Two Different Compression Strategies
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was created by CompuServe in 1987 and uses LZW lossless compression with an indexed color palette limited to 256 colors. This palette restriction makes GIF well-suited for simple graphics, logos, and icons, but poorly suited for photographs where thousands of distinct colors are needed. GIF's most distinctive feature is animation support — multiple frames with per-frame timing stored in a single file — which has made it the dominant format for short web animations since the 1990s.
JPG (JPEG) uses lossy compression based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), operating on 8×8 pixel blocks. Unlike GIF's 256-color limit, JPG supports 24-bit true color — 16.7 million distinct colors — making it the standard format for photographs and complex imagery. JPG achieves much higher compression ratios than GIF for photographic content, typically reducing file sizes by 90-95% compared to uncompressed data while maintaining visually acceptable quality.
When converting GIF to JPG, the browser's native image decoder renders the GIF's first frame at full 24-bit color depth (expanding from the 256-color indexed palette), then the Canvas API encodes this pixel data as JPG. Transparency is not preserved — GIF's 1-bit transparency (fully transparent or fully opaque) is composited onto a white background, since JPG has no transparency channel.
Color Depth Expansion
GIF files use an indexed color palette of up to 256 entries, where each entry is a 24-bit RGB color. When the browser renders a GIF, it maps each palette index to its full RGB value, effectively expanding the image to 24-bit color. The JPG encoder then compresses this 24-bit data. For images that were originally photographs before being converted to GIF, this process can partially recover the visual continuity lost during palette reduction, since JPG's DCT smoothing naturally blends the color-banded regions that GIF's palette quantization introduced.
